Long John Silver

Twelve days after Brandi Moore’s death, citizens of Belen came together to support the Moore family at a fundraiser held on Dec.17 at Long John Silver and A&W in Belen.

"It was amazing. The community was great," said Paul Baca, owner of the two restaurants, both located across the street from his other business, Baca Auto, which has been in Valencia County for 70 years.

From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Dec. 17 100 percent of the sales at Long John Silver and A&W were donated to the Moore family to help with the cost of medical and funeral expenses.

About 600 people from all over Valencia County showed up for dinner and generated in $2,845 in food sales and $197 in cash donations for the Moore family. Volunteers assisted the Baca family with the night’s events.

"Mayor Ronnie Torres was washing dishes in the back, and his wife, Barbara, was there too. The assistant principals from Belen Middle School were cleaning tables, and we had volunteer parents making root beer floats," Baca said. "There was so much energy." Baca, whose 13-year-old son Emilio went to Belen Middle School with Brandi, had never met the Moore family before the fundraiser event, though he was familiar with the family’s situation.

Brandi was diagnosed, along with her sister Samantha and brother Gary, with a condition called restrictive cardiomyopathy, a rare heart condition that gets progressively worse. The family’s doctors told them that a heart transplant was their best possible chance of survival.

Brandi received a heart just a few months after her older sister Samantha go hers. For the next eight months after getting her new heart, Brandi did extremely well, according to her family. She was a seventh-grader at BMS, could finally run and be active in school and was doing well, according to her doctors.

But everything changed the day before Thanksgiving when Brandi developed a cough and flu-like symptoms. When taken to Urgent Care, her vital signs revealed that her heart rate was very fast and irregular, and an echogram revealed that it was not expanding or pumping like it should be. Her body was rejecting the new heart.

Brandi was flown to the Children’s Hospital Heart Instituted in Denver, Colo., where she stayed in the intensive care unit until she died on Dec.5.

Baca, who has four children of his own ranging in ages from 7y to 13, decided to do something to help the Moore family after hearing the topic discussed at a Belen Middle School parent council meeting. "Everyone wanted to help, but no one knew how," Baca Said. "I have four children of my own, and we’ve been blessed that they’re all healthy. I though this is a good way to make use of my business. When God blesses you, you gotta pass it on."

Baca said that many of the customers who came to dinner on Dec. 17 weren’t even aware of the fundraiser for Brandi but were excited and happy to help when they found out.

In the back of the restaurant, Brandi’s parents set up a tagble with photo albums of the girl and her siblings and five grocery bags full of stuffed animals that beonged to Brandi that the family gave away to other children who cam that night.

"If I could say anything about that night, the mood and feeling was amazing–helping someone and the feeling of contributing good will. That’s what it’s about. We get so caught up with our own lives that we fail to recognized that there’s a need out there," Baca said.

Coincidentally, along with being the night of the fundraiser for the Moores, Dec. 17 also marked the five-year anniversary to the day of Long John Silver and A&W opening.

"One thing that’s beautiful about Belen is when someone or a family is in need, people band together to help. It’s not the landscape that makes the community, it’s the people," Baca said.
